Improving Performance During a Project

Improvement During The Project?

Your project has been underway already for some time. There is quite a bit of code written, and most of it runs well, but the issue managment system keeps gathering more and more enhancement requests and more and more reported defects. It feels like defect fixing takes up the team's entire time. New features are on the back-burner. What can you do?

Mid-Project Solution

To get a hanlde on where your project is you need to get a handle on the defects. If the defect count is running amok then your development might be spinning its wheels. Here is how you can dig out:

  • Map out the parts of the current system.
  • Map the defects to the parts of the system.
  • Focus your effort on the most important and most risky parts.

In the short term your leverage to make lasting changes is a bit limited, but not zero. For example, if you don't work in iterations, you can start reorganizing the reamaining work into iterations, and then start delivering them. If you don't do any reviews, you can start doing some targeted reviews, and get immediate benefit.
